The first photograph (Now housed at Harry Ransom Center, Austin, Texas.) was taken in 1826 (some say 1827) by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, a french inventor. He used a technique called heliography which took at least 8 hours to several days of exposure time. Images were rough.
Took over 10 years for the next upgrade to photography. 1839 Louis Daguerre, Niépce's associate, develop the daguerreotype process. Requiring minute of in camera exposure and produce a much more clear detailed photograph.
A few years from that in 1841 William Henry Fox Talbot introduced the calotype. Using paper-based negatives which allowed for multiple reproductions vs the single image daguerreotype.
Ensuing the cyanotype process in 1842 & the collodion process in the 1850s, further improving speed and versatility, and was used for decades.
First color photograph in 1861. 1884 roll film was introduced. 1888 the first pre loaded kodak camera for amature use. 1900 kodak released the Brownie, an inexpensive user-reloadable box camera, brining photography to the masses. 1907 Autochrome plates, first practical color photography. 1920s 35mm compact handheld photography. 1947 Polaroid. 1975 first digital camera, 1990 first consumer level digital camera. 1999 Kyocera VP-210 first camera phone, front facing. 2000 Sharp J-SH04 phone allowing user to send photographs electronically.
